Bair Island Ecological Reserve is a maze of meandering channels whose physical characteristics are defined primarily by the amount of water that infiltrates during higher tides. Much of the reserve is accessible only by boat, and as we learned the hard way, it’s not possible to leave when the tide is retreating.
