I made a similar composition in August 2003—two months earlier in the season. Comparing the two images illustrates the changing color of the salt ponds in response to increasing levels of brine shrimp and halophilic bacteria as the summer progresses. The water turns deeper red and evaporation is more pronounced later in the season.
