Photo by Scott Haefner: Goodbye, Indy

The S.S. Independence on its final night in San Francisco.

Tomorrow morning the ship will begin its voyage to Singapore and ultimately Alang, India to be broken. This is not confirmed, but it seems to be the most likely scenario from what I have pieced together.

In contrast to the up-close photos that I was fortunate to have the opportunity to capture, this view will be familiar to many San Francisco locals and even passing motorists on the 280 Freeway. The ship became somewhat of an icon on the SF skyline south of the ballpark as it sat here decaying into disrepair for the past several years.

After being retired from inter-island Hawaiian service in late 2001, the Indy made its final voyage to SF and was laid up with the mothball fleet in Suisun Bay before being brought to Mare Island and finally to the dry docks in downtown SF in 2004.

Unable to make the voyage under its own power, the Indy will be pulled out to sea by tugboat.
