Zebra oil well pump jack, one of the few remaining derricks from the “Iron Zoo” that dots Hwy 33 west of Interstate 5, bobbing its head up and down endlessly.
The derricks were installed in the early 70s by a local artist and hotel owner as a clever way to get motorists off the Interstate and into the small town of Coalinga where their hotel was located. It worked, but only a few of the original 34 derricks are still operational. A move is afoot to bring the others out of storage and back to the roadside.
