Built in 1910 to support the thriving US Steel town, the long abandoned Union Station in Gary, Indiana has sat vacant since the 1950s. Considering it has been abandoned for over 5 decades, the exterior is still in remarkable condition.
An ambitious project called the “Midwest Rail Initiative” hopes to restore the station and create high-speed rail service between Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago and Indianapolis. However, various plans to reuse the facility have been in the works since it closed over 50 years ago. The Station is on the National Historic Landmarks Top 10 list.
