Osawatomie State Hospital, the first insane asylum in Kansas, originally opened in a farm house in 1866. It expanded rapidly and had as many as 1500 beds at its peak in the 1900s. Today, it is partially abandoned and many of the structures, including the main Kirkbride Building, sadly have been torn down.
