Clouds streaking across the sky at Sunflower Ammunition Plant, which shut down for the final time in 1996.

Constructed in 1941, it went through several iterations, producing gunpowder, solid propellant for rockets and missiles, TNT, nitric acid, nitroglycerin, and nitrocellulose. In its peak years during WWII, the plant had as many as 12,000 employees and operated around the clock. It was also active during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

From the 1950s - 1970s, the Army located their Midwest Radio Receive Station on-site, a large, High Frequency radio receiver site.

Now, the former ammunition plant is all but deserted.
