Main entrance to the abandoned Michael Reese Hospital, which was founded in 1881 and is one of the oldest hospitals in Chicago. Building closures started in the 1990s, and on September 28, 2008, the hospital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Michael Reese, a real estate developer who died in 1877, left funds in his will to build the hospital. His heirs requested that the hospital be open to everybody, regardless of creed, nationality, or race.
The Gropius in Chicago Coalition is working to save Michael Reese Hospital form demolition and protect the legacy of Walter Gropius, the architectural agency behind the campus master plan beginning in 1945.
