Founded in 1886 during the Colorado Silver Boom, Gilman later became the largest zinc mine in Colorado when deeper sulfide ore deposits were increasingly “contaminated” with zinc and smelters refused to buy them.
The New Jersey Zinc Company entered Gilman in 1912, and bought all the principal mines and eventually, the entire townsite.
