Photo by Scott Haefner: USS Hornet

Originally named USS Kearsarge, the ship was renamed in honor of the 7th USS Hornet, which was lost in battle in October 1942.

Used extensively during WWII to launch air raids and ground attacks, it was later used in the Apollo Program for recovering both manned and unmanned space flights during the 1960s. In 1969, with President Nixon on board, the Hornet picked up astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins from the sea after they returned from their historic trip to the moon.

The Hornet was decommissioned in 1970 and opened as a museum at the former Alameda Naval Air Station in 1998.
