As I was setting up the GPS at my field site today, I heard a grunting noise nearby. I looked up and saw a wild burro staring at me, only ~150 feet away! After letting me know that he didn’t appreciate me being there, he slowly wandered off (look closely—he blends in well).
When I got back to my hotel this evening, I saw a front page story about the BLM gathering “excess” wild horses and burros in the region. Fortunately, they don’t eradicate the animals, instead opting to adopt them out or alternatively send them to pastures in the midwest.
