Kau Sugar Mill, formerly part of Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Co., was one of the oldest sugar companies dating from the American Civil War period. When it shut down operations in the late 1990s, it was the last sugar plantation on the Big Island to close, ending an era and putting nearly every resident in this single-industry town out of work. Today, the town is rebounding thanks to increasing property values and tourism.
