In an effort to revitalize the neighborhood where he grew up, Tyree Guyton, along with his grandfather and former wife, transformed Heidelberg St. into a massive, grassroots art installation. The project began in 1986, and despite the city of Detroit’s efforts to demolish parts of the installation twice during the 1990’s, the project is still going strong.

Vacant lots and abandoned homes have been transformed into “gigantic art sculptures” as well as surrounding streets, sidewalks, and trees. In this example, literally hundreds of stuffed animals are nailed to the exterior of this vacant home.
