One of the main tenets of state hospitals built according to the “Kirkbride Plan” was to be as self sufficient as possible. They functioned as small, independent cities in some respects, complete with parks, farmland, cemeteries, and even their own power plants. This photo was taken in the old power generation facility at Greystone.
