Sun dial on top of Flagstaff Hill with the town of Russell visible in the background. European settlers erected a flag at this site to assert their authority, but it was chopped down repeatedly by Ngapuhi leader Hone Heke. The forth and final time the flag was removed, the skirmish ended in a bloody battle in which much of the town was destroyed.
