    <title>Pillars</title>
    <summary type="html"><![CDATA[<a href="http://scotthaefner.com/feeder/?FeederAction=clicked&amp;feed=KAP+photos&amp;seed=http%3A%2F%2Fscotthaefner.com%2Fphotos%2Fkap%2F2717%2F&amp;seed_title=Pillars"><img src="http://scotthaefner.com/photos/images/midsquare/kap/tronaPinnacles03.jpg" width="175" height="175" alt="Pillars" align="left" hspace="7" /></a><p>More than 500 tufa spires rise up from the basin of the ancient Searles Lake bed 10-miles south of Trona, a depressed mining town. Similar to Mono Lake, these tufa towers formed underwater as calcium carbonate precipitated out of the water over time, only to be exposed later as the lake bed dried up. The towers range in age from 10,000 - 100,000 years old. </p><p>Taken on March 12, 2009 </p>]]></summary>

    <title>Drama Unfolding</title>

But we couldn't have asked for better conditions, even though the sun never really peeked out of the clouds. The drama of the brewing storm was breathtaking and created phenomenal conditions for photography. What's more, the clouds cleared after sunset, exposing the full moon for night photography. </p><p>Taken on October 12, 2008 </p>]]></summary>

It was exposed in 2004 before being partially covered again in 2005 due to record-high mountain snow pack melting off in the spring.
