Kiting Magazine People’s Choice Award Spring 2005
This was the second year for the People’s Choice Award for KAP. KAPers who are members of AKA were eligible to submit prints of their best work which were then displayed at the convention. People attending the convention voted on their favorite pictures. Convention attendees chose from 30 pictures from 12 AKA KAPers. Presented here are the People’s Choice Winner and the four runners up.
Jerry Fincher won top honors with his picture entitled, “Shadow People on the Beach.” Jerry used a Canon PowerShot S400 digital elph mounted on a Brooks Leffler basic rig, lifted by a FlowForm 30. The rig was controlled by a four channel radio. The picture was taken in January 2004 at Clearwater Beach, Florida during the KTAI trade show. The camera was about 100 ft above the subjects walking on the beach. Only one of them was aware of interesting shadows. The texture of the groomed beach shows up nicely, revealing footprints and tracks from the grooming machine, as well as clumps of seaweed.
Scott Haefner had two pictures in the top five. Despite Scott’s previous bad experience with fountains (see Winter ‘04 Kiting), he took this great image of the International Fountain at Seattle Center, Seattle, Washington entitled “Snail Shell.” “Ring Shadow” was taken during the 2004 KAP tour of Scotland, KAPiSco showing McCaig’s Tower located in Oban, Scotland. Scott also has an interactive panoramic picture of McCaig’s Tower on his web site that is worth visiting.
Henry Jebe’s panoramic view of Juneau, Alaska was taken with a panoramic camera that Henry built himself.
Craig Wilson’s picture called “Winter Storage,” shows tables used in the warmer months at the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union terrace in Madison, Wisconson. The shot was made during Kites on Ice in February 2004.
